The first time I went to Samui was November of 1997. It was beautiful. Truly a topical paradise. I went there again in 2001 and I was still in love with the place. My most recent visit was December of 2008. The place looks like Pattaya south. So many bars and Issan bar girls... The people in the town didn't seem nearly as friendly or happy to see a tourist, there were only happy when they were selling a t-shirt or a wooden frog. When will the people of Thailand learn that their greatest asset is the beauty of their country and beaches, their hospitality and culture and not bars and bar girls?

The night ferry was quite the experience. A trip that normally would take only two hours or less on an express boat, the night ferry departs at 11pm and arrives at Ko Samui at 5am in the morning. Inside, you're packed in on flat beds side by side to sleep for the slow journey eastward to the island. I found the accomodations to be very welcoming (aside from the average roaming cockroach, but they become your friends quickly). Sunrise from the boat was a good start to a new day in a new place in Thailand. We were soon to find out that Ko Samui and the island life was much different than the city life of Bangkok. There were the obvious differences: the laid back lifestyle (even more so than the mai pen rai (no worries) attitude exhibited everywhere in Thailand), the cleaner, easier to breath air, and the sea. But, we found a striking monopoly of transportation services and numerous farangs (the Thai word for Westerners) to add to the dimensions of the place. One thing we learned about choosing a place to stay on the island is this: if you want club life, stay near to the stretch of beaches where it's at. We stayed on the northern side of the island (after randomly wandering around the island at sunrise to find something)
